When I first read one of Hunt's book (Esther) I was unsure if I wanted to dive into her work because most historical fiction books, the biblical ones, have very predictable endings and I wanted to read a book that surprised me. Judah's Wife was that book. I was hooked by the character who suffered abuse in silence, by the way Leah's quiet personality captivated. I kept reading to see what would become of Leah and her mother and Hunt did not disappoint.I liked that Leah's dad did not get the chance to further ruin their lives but I wanted more to become of Leah and her mother. I was certainly intrigued by the wars and by the imagery of degradation of God's laws and His temple. Hunt did an amazing job describing what the silent years could have been like when Israel had no king. Of course, I was saddened when Judah was killed on the battlefield. I wanted them all to live and I wanted the book to end on a happy note but as anyone who believes the Bible knows, the silent years were anything but happy. I liked reading about the love Judah and Leah shared. I recommend this book to others who are tired of predicable endings.
I enjoyed this story. Being a baptist , I had never even heard of Judah Maccabeas. I thought this was a purely fictional story until I saw the reference to the book of Maccabeas and did a little googling while I was reading just to see what all that was about. The first half was very entertaining. It bogged down for me about 2\3 of the way through with all the details about the battles. I continued reading because I was invested in the story but it was hard to stay into it at times. SPOILERS AHEAD! BEWARE! I would've preferred for Judah and Leah to have had a child. I found it sad that they lost the one and never had another baby. And the end was too graphic. It was sad enough without the descriptions of the injuries, a swift death not so gruesomely described would've been preferable. All in all, I'm glad I read it. I do wonder why God didn't deem to have this time in history as part of the inspired word.
I loved everything about this book. The author has characterized her people well, so accurate to their backgrounds and time period.I have done a great deal of research into Judaism for my book series and for the background info for my readers group, I am impressed at this well-researched novel.Someone once told me that people like history wrapped in fiction. That's what I am to do, but rarely find in some of the books I have bought. This author ticks all the boxes. Loved the explanation at the end about her research. As for the oil and the Menorah, I too have heard the tale that it was added. The writing was skillful, captivating and thoroughly enjoyable. Loved it.
The tale of the Maccabees has so much potential, so I expected this to be a wonderful story, but the author really disappointed me! While her writing style was pretty nice and her characters decently crafted, the dull plot dragged on and on. The battles were over-explained, slowing them down and sucking out all the excitement. There were maybe three scenes that actually provoked my emotions. The romance was practically non-existent.While I understand it was common practice then, the fact that she was 15 and he was like 25 at the time of their marriage grossed me out a little. If there was a place to stretch historical accuracy a little, that would have been it. Instead she left out one of the most important events of the Chanukkah story: the miracle of the menorah's oil! The miracle that holds so much symbolism and glory to Adonai wasn't even mentioned. It was also to my understanding that the Jews decided to celebrate the event annually after the fact, but in Hunt's novel Judah immediately decided to make it a holiday.I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a good emotional or adventurous book. Which is what I'm basically always looking for in a book. Not satisfying at all.
I am studying salvation history in my bible study, and during one session, we talked about the brave Maccabees, who lead a courageous and ultimately successful resistance to violent suppression of their religion by their Seleuicid rulers. So I was very interested in reading Judah's wife by Angela Hunt. She always writes thought provoking historical and biblical fiction. I love how she brought to life Judah and his family. Judah was such a loyal self-sacrificing hero who encouraged the army of Israel to take a stand and not lose their religious heritage or compromise their faith. It is a continual example to every age. They put their trust completely in God, and though outnumbered, fought battle after battle with God's help. Makes me want to go back and re-read Maccabees! Angela Hunt does an amazing job, making their story come to life.(If you are interested in more information about how this story fits into the bible: There is some confusion about why the Maccabbee's are in Catholic and Orthodox bibles and not in Protestant Bibles. The Jewish people had two canons: The Canon among the Palestinian Jews (Protocanonical Books), the Hebrew Old Testament, and The Canon among the Alexandrian Jews (Deutero-canonical Books), also known as the ancient Greek Old Testament known as the Septuagint. Scholars generally admit that the Septuagint faithfully represents the O. T. as it was current among the Hellenist or Alexandrian Jews in the age immediately preceding Christ. It is this version of the Old Testament that the Jews and the authors of the New Testament were using. After the Jewish temple was destroyed in 70AD by the Romans, and the increasing growth of the Christians, the Jews decided to go back to the Hebrew Old Testament, (minus the 7 books found in the Greek Version). The Christians continued using it. The canon of the entire Bible was essentially settled around the turn of the fourth century includes the Greek version of the Old Testament. Around this time there were no less than five instances when the canon was formally identified: the Synod of Rome (382), the Council of Hippo (393), the Council of Carthage (397), a letter from Pope Innocent I to Exsuperius, Bishop of Toulouse (405), and the Second Council of Carthage (419). In every instance, the canon was identical to what Catholic Bibles contain today. By the time of the Reformation, Christians had been using the same 73 books in their Bibles (46 in the Old Testament, 27 in the New Testament)--and thus considering them inspired--for more than 1100 years. Martin Luther adopted the Hebrew version rejecting the version used by Jews and Christians in the first century, and what Christians had been using since the time of Christ. He put the 7 books of the Old Testament not found in the Hebrew canon in the appendix. He also put the letter of James, the letter to the Hebrews, the letters of John, and the book of Revelation from the New Testament in an appendix. His followers went along with his changes in the Old Testament, but not the New Testament.)
