The aftermath of the Civil War left the South in turmoil. Southerners were levied taxes that they could not pay and lost their property. The Klan terrorized black people (with beatings and lynchings) and white people that they suspected were sympathetic to them. Some black people rose up to retaliate against those who wronged them. Geneva found herself trapped in the midst of this madness when the Klan came to lynch her. Heavily pregnant, she fled from the sheriff who was the Klan's leader. Reed, one of the Yankees she despises, comes to her aid. This is an excellent story and highlights many of the happenings of the time. It is the second that I have read from this series and I enjoyed both of them.
I love historical fiction especially when the history aspect is done well. Also, I appreciate a historical romance that is placed in early American settings. The south after the Civil War deserves its stories to be told. This is nicely done. Good characters, difficult but believable situations faced bravely and intelligently, and a good basic plot all weave an interesting story. This is a "clean" romance but does not get sickly sweet because of that. I recommend this good read.
I surely was not disappointed one tiny bit! Oh my goodness this series just gets better and better! I read this book in my one day, I just couldn't put it down.I'm anxious to see what the next book is about. I hate that it will be the final one in this series, but hopefully Carolyn will write follow ups about each member of the Hamilton family.Sorry about calling you Caroline, I've meant Carolyn each time, I hope you'll forgive me. I really love this series.
I loved the whole series. T he books are similar but still different. The endings are predictable but I wouldn't want it any other way. The storyline of each book is totally different. I still need to read about Indigo but I am sure I will enjoy it. My only complaint is that it was difficult to figure out the order of the books. I want to read them in the correct order and the books are not numbered. I read a lot of reviews to find the order. Shouldn't have to do that.
As always, love anything by Carolyn Brown
Very good book and was easy to read. Geneva went thru so much getting away from the Klan and she was a strong willed woman. Reed was such a gentleman and he was a Yankee. Loved all the things they endured to get away from bad men
I really enjoyed this book. After having read the first 3 which were pretty much "Rebel vs. Yankee", this one was a nice change of pace. Not that it didn't contain that element, it just wasn't as constant as in the first 2. I'm looking forward to wrapping this series up with the final book on the sister of the Hamilton family. While I enjoyed these as an easy, light read, they aren't books that are going to remain on my bookshelf. I can't imagine going back and re-reading them as I do some of my favorites.
Carolyn Brown is one of my favorite authors! This story takes place during the time of stagecoaches, trains, and the Klan. Good story. The violence is not graphic and it is a slow paced, get to know you, love story. Did not realize this was a series (this is number 3) but I will be reading all the books in the series.
