I love his YouTube channel where he goes seriously in depth into technique and developing a recipe and sometimes the history and artistry involved behind things. This cookbook feels like it just glosses over all that though. The recipes tend to be pretty basic and run-of-the-mill aside from a handful of standout things to try, and most of the recipes are just presented as the recipe itself with maybe a few quips about Alex being French.I’d recommend this book for someone who is just getting started with cooking and trying to learn some good basic recipes, but more advanced home cooks should probably give this one a skip. (But keep watching his channel!)
I have followed Alex's _Alex French Guy Cooking_ YouTube channel (it's in English), for a long time. He is funny and irreverent -- the perfect millennial French new media perfectness.I pre-ordered this cookbook a LONG time before it was actually available. Based on the YouTube channel I expected thoughtful recipes laced with humor and great hacks that would get the same results with less work (but only when quality would not suffer). That's what IÂ got.I love Alex. IÂ love his recipes. The book is really quite well done with great graphics. My only major complaint is that a cookbook should have some sort of lay flat binding. This does not. It's not worth a star, so I'm still giving five, but in a lesser cookbook it would totes cost a star.I wish for more process illustrations, either drawings or photos, some things get them and some, sadly, don't. For example there are two different ways of chopping an onion taught with only text. I _saw_ that episode, so the text evokes the images in my memory, but if you hadn't it might not be clear what the text meant. I hope Alex's next (of many future), cookbook learns from this.So I guess that means that I'm reviewing a combination of the cookbook and the video series. I hope you get the cookbook and binge on the videos.Jacque Pepin has watched, endorsed, and done a back and forth video challenge with this channel if that means anything to you -- it does to me. Just do it. Pull the trigger. You know you want to;) I love him and you will too:) I promise.
I received your book today and read it in your voice. Well written and beautifully expressed thoughts and recipes. I can't wait to use them. I noticed a single quirk, tell me if anyone else picks up on this. You're wearing the same shirt in every picture! haha!
I have followed Alex's YouTube channel for a little over a year, and I am very glad that he has made his recipes available in print form. The hardcover is fantastic, small, and the photography is excellent. When I read the recipe, I feel as though I am in Alex's head. Bravo, or whatever french is for good job.
Being a fan of Alex is not a requirement to enjoy this book. He managed to translate his personality, vision, and recipes in to book form capturing all that is him and his unique view of the world. The recipes are excellent and the hints and tips really stand out because they deliver advice and ideas that I haven't heard before. Overall this is a great cookbook with a unique blend of recipes that are a mix of foods across the globe.
He is the same entertaining and educational guy in his book as he is in his videos. I thoroughly am enjoying the book. His hacks and tips are handy, and I really appreciate how he includes alternative names and ingredients for those of us who aren't familiar with Aubergines and other French words. He makes it pretty easy to put together a great dish with what I have already on hand. Humorous and tasty. Great book!
This cookbook is much like Alex's YouTube channel, delightful and charming. The recipes are easy to understand and approachable. So many cookbooks are either impossible or simply unrealistic for a busy tired guy to make after work or they're so boring and obvious that you don't need a book. This one is great. It's full of fantastic exciting recipes that I can't wait to make!
Nice addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes don't require much equipment but focus on quality ingredients. His sourdough bread videos on Youtube sparked my interest in making bread for the first time and it is now something I do weekly. It was nice to see the written version in the book.
