Alan and his wife, Berte, among numerous philanthropic commitments, are dedicated to improving the opportunities for Native American youth living on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Terry Winchell is the owner of Fighting Bear Antiques in Jackson, Wyoming, specializing in Plains Indian beadwork, Navajo textiles and other Native American arts. He is the author of Molesworth: The Pioneer of Western Design. Winchell has performed appraisals for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming, and consulted for the John Toomey Gallery in Chicago and Christie’s in New York. The collection shown here is incredible, and for anybody who actually does beadwork this book is a treasure. I wish I could remove the author's simpering, self-congratulatory text, though. It really comes across as "See me here! I own all this stuff, and I outbid other people to get it! Oh, and here's a picture of me with Sean Connery." Ugh. Despite that, if you don't read the text and look at the photos instead (they are very nicely done and the reproductions are excellent) this is one of the best books on its subject out there, although of course it is weak in some areas and strong in others. There are no bows or bowcases, no sheaths, and no fetishes, just to cite a few.
When money is no object, an individual can both, 1) collect whatever he desires, and, b) write/publish a superior volume. That's what we have here.Aside from my personal jealousies and slight twinges of resentment (I have no one collecting for ME, since my economics are different than the author's), the photography and pieces here are superior. Museum quality and presented in first rate fashion. That says it all. This is one more volume that any serious collector or lover of American Indian art should have in their personal collection. If you can't afford the pieces here, having this book is the next best thing.
The photo's alone in this book make it worth owning. It has wonderful descriptions about the articles represented and a nicebiography of the people featured as the collectors. Many of these pieces also have a provenance and that is told also in the book.I am oh so happy that I made this purchase and I encourage all who enjoy Native Americana to buy this.
I wanted a reference book for the traditional native American arts and I sure got it. This is an incredible book of the Hirschfield Collection, the best I have ever seen. The narrative was easy reading, but very informative. Also, the photography is top quality. I will enjoy and treasure this book for a very long time.
