Didn't realize how big and heavy this book is. Bought it to do a puzzle in bed to help put me to sleep, but the bulk of the book and position of the puzzles on the page make it a bit of a strain to hold the book while lying on my back in bed. Also, the puzzles are not separated by difficulty. Late at night I usually want to do something not too challenging as I try to nod off and so it can take a while to find a puzzle that I think will be simple enough for the situation. Would be much better if they separated the puzzles into degrees of difficulty,
Fair warning: these puzzles are from 1993-1997. Obviously puzzles are puzzles - they're still fun, still doable, but the pop culture references and even some common spellings (see: "moslem") are fairly out of date. I'm only in my twenties, so there's a fair number of clues that I just don't have the right frame of reference to know. Also, the puzzles are randomized and unmarked, rather than being organized by difficulty. You never know whether you're doing a Monday or a Friday. At first I was annoyed about it, but then I realized I was actually persisting longer when I struggled, where I might have just thrown up my hands if it had been marked as more difficult.
My husband and I love crosswords, and when he asked for a "difficult" crossword book for Christmas, this is what I settled on. This should last us years, and hopefully make us that much better at completing them. This is definitely a difficult book. We've gone through the first handful of puzzles, and I don't think we've gotten through any of them without a little bit of a struggle, some more than others (which is a good thing). My one qualm with this book is that it doesn't label which are supposed to be "easy" and more "difficult". We just trudge through regardless, but it would be nice to know what we're getting ourselves into before we've ready all the clues.
I bought this for my cousin's birthday. She loves it. She did 10 the first week. She finds the NY Times crosswords tricky and hard, doing them in the newspaper, but this book is kept, rather than being tossed out or passed on, so there's ample time for answers to click. She says that people give up too soon. Her goal, as a senior, is to stay sharp. I'm not a trivia person, especially regarding celebrities, but I'm almost ready to buy this NY Times Ultimate Crossword Omnibus for me because I think one puzzle can teach me something about another puzzle; I can go back and try to fill in more answers in puzzles I wasn't able to complete the first time. If I do, and it works, making me "smarter", I'd give it 6 stars.
The puzzles are old, from the 80s or 90s, so cultural clues don't make sense any more. The puzzles are all mixed together, so you don't know what day of the week you're working on. Would it really have been that difficult to label, or sort them by difficulty? And yes, it is huge and difficult to use. I'm new to crosswords, currently working on Tuesday puzzles. Since they're all mixed together, I don't know what I'm working on and just get frustrated. The book is pretty much a waste for me.
Great book for the chair-side (not the briefcase). A collection of reliably varied, challenging, entertaining, and well-crafted puzzles. I sometimes remove pages to take along, or to avoid the annoyance of the book's binding. Some are a bit diabolical, but at least they do not rely too heavily on completely unknown rare words or TV pop culture references, like many cheaply-produced puzzles do.
The print was way too small and difficult to read, and they put two puzzles back and front of all pages. I returned it and replaced it with a book that had one puzzle per page so I could actually read it without a magnifying glass... ...and my eyes are not actually that bad. I guess nab it if you need a gift, but I didn't find it to be a quality book in print alone. I cannot comment on the puzzles (because I couldn't read them, haha).
Think you're bright enough to do a New York Times crossword by the great Will Shortz? You probably aren't, but Will makes them easy enough for most of us...at least until you get to the Thursday puzzles. Don't like looking at your smartphone on the toilet...then jump on this omnibus for a fun ride.
