Phillip (or the publisher) 'reels' in the reader (especially the Christian reader) with a catchy subtitle about rediscovering Grace (which I would argue is what we all need to be about - all the time). The important point that he makes early is that we all need to rediscover God's Grace so we can live graciously in an ungracious world. So what is my beef with his book? In his great quest for spiritual answers, Phillip has decided that he is greater than God. For he states, up front, the rather bizzare claim that "all will be saved". He then goes on to take the Bible WAY out of context to "prove" his point. He wants us to believe that all will eventually be "goodness and light" - he professes not to believe in Satan - etc, etc.The SERIOUS problem that I have with his book is that he absolutely fails to deal with the issue of evil in this world. If we are all going to be saved, and there is no devil, or satan, or evil force - then why is there so much violence, hatred, and malice in the world today. Phillip does not have an answer for that, simply because he has decided to lift a brand of 'goodness' theology from the Bible, and has refused to acknowledge the greater truth - that salvation only comes from Jesus Christ, because man is inherrantly evil at his core, and cannot save himself, or enter a relationship with God by himself, without Christ. His refuses to believe this CORE tenat of the Christian faith, and his solution to his unbelief is to write this book to essentually say "Look, I know what the Bible said, but what you (the reader) read in the Bible is NOT the truth. I know better and I am going to tell you". In taking this approach, Phillip has taken on the very blasphemous role of deciding that he knows God better than Jesus did, and that he is a better truth-teller than Jesus. How arrogant. This bad theological message should come accross loud and clear to the mature Christian reader. The danger of the book is that it has the potential to lull many Christians into thinking that Jesus didn't mean what he said when he said things like "heaven can only be entered through a narrow gate" and "at that day I will say ... depart from me, for your deeds were evil"Phillip Gulley practices a brand of Smorgasbord Christianity that is akin to eating Chinese fast food - it leaves you feeling full and satified, but in only a few hours you find yourself hungering for more, and you have that dissatifying, empty feeling.I found it an interesting, thought provoking read for a mature Christian who is very grounded in solid biblical truths. All others should stay away.
One of the best books I have ever read! I grew up in a traditional church fearing God and the threat of Hell! God loves me unconditionally. Only when we understand that, are we truly free to live as God wants. Only then can we show the light of Christ to all people! Thank you for a well written and very educational book!
I like Gulley (and Mulholland) and appreciate his relationship with God. I agree with much of his criticism of organized religion and certainly with distinquishing between fear and love in following Christ. What I don't agree with, at least not yet, is his basis for these beliefs which he claims is because of his accepting "Universal Salvation". I do not know if he is correct or not in his belief but I think most of the outcomes in the Christian lifestyle he desires, which he attributes to Universal Salvation, can exist without having to take that particular step in faith. Many Christians are struggling with the concept of the Trinity. Was Jesus actually God or was he, as He claimed, the Son of God. Gulley doesn't seem to have that struggle. I don't think he believes Jesus was God at all and in fact he believes Jesus' goal on earth was much more than simply dying for our sins and demanding acceptance of the 4 spiritual laws in order to gain salvation. In fact Gulley doesn't believe that was His mission at all. He may be right and reading this book will certainly open up some ideas to chew on. And that's OK in my book. I believe pursuit of truth is honored by God.
Having been raised with an exteme fundamentalist (Baptist) background it has taken me a long time to open my arms, heart, and brain wide enough to even consider other beliefs than those I was raised with. Slowly, God has been loosening my grasp on "old" beliefs, and challenging me to even consider others. It has been a long process, and extremely difficult at times. When I had this book recommended to me, I was intrigued. Several times during the reading of it, I wanted to throw it against the opposite wall to where I sat! I had to mentally, and spiritually "chew" some meat from my 'holy cows' of belief, and allow myself to even consider what the authors presented here. However, it was done with such grace, humility of heart, and desire to know God better, that I couldn't lay it down. God IS love, and is much bigger than any of us can even imagine!! Read this book, if you dare! It may shake your spiritual world, it may open your eyes to other possibilities than just your own narrow ones, why, it may even change your life--as it did mine!! Happy reading!
I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about the eternal destiny of themselves or others. Phillip Gulley and James Mulholland make a convincing case that if God is love, then he will save every person. This book is a treasure!
I am telling everyone to read this book.. It is idealistic, but that is what Jesus taught
I enjoyed the book. It is very thought provoking. I'm sure very conservative Christians will hate it because hell is a big part of their religion. However, like it or hate it, agee with it or disagree with it, I think you'd have to admit that if everybody lived by the grace discussed in the book the world would be a much better place.
This book was my first introduction to Universalism. It is well-written and every chapter held my interest. There are many thought provoking concepts that make great discussion topics. They certainly do not make good debate topics unless you are much more well-read on the topic. That is actually my only complaint is that some chapters were interesting but light and airy, proposing problems but a little light on solutions. This is a great introduction to the topic - there are other more heavily referenced books available to compliment this one once curiousity has been piqued.
