In the 1920's, oil was found on the Osage reservation, transforming the tribe into the wealthiest population in the world. Tribe members attended the most exclusive finishing schools, owned expensive automobiles, & dressed in the finest fashions of the era. Strangers descended upon the region, marrying Osage women in an attempt to gain control over the newfound wealth. Many of the new brides died mysteriously shortly after their weddings. The author's young & beautiful grandmother, Sybil Bolton, was among the last of the murdered brides. Eventually, the author is forced to suspect that his own grandfather engineered her murder. The term bloodland describes one's place of origin or homeland. While investigating his grandmother's life & death, the author undergoes a personal & spiritual renewal, finding an integrated identity as a mixed-blood Native American.

This book impacted me deeply as a member of the Osage Nation. My grandmother was the last and youngest of the tribe to receive a headright in the Osage Allotment Act of 1906, of which I will inherit a portion when my father passes on one day. She was number 2229. I knew of the killings in the 1920's from sitting at her knee as a young child and listening to the stories and the history, but this book filled in a lot of blanks for me. Although I am not a full blood (not many of them left these days) my Osage heritage has become very important to me. I thank the author for this book. Excellent research and a story well told.
Great story line. Dragged a little at times but a story worth being told. I came upon this book after reading Killers of the Flower Moon which was an excellent book. This is definitely worth reading.
Beware of helping hands - coming into new wealth because of oil discoveries on their land, the Osage were protected by Congress' passing a law for guardianship. This had the unintended consequence of putting them at the mercy of more whites, often with legal and political power, to add to the problems of men who tried to marry women owning headrights to gain control of wealth, and others who tried to kill off the Osage. A terrible account of outrageous exploitation in a frontier of greed and grasping.
I liked all of the history about the Osage I was born in Fairfax and didn't know all of this. what I liked the least was how long it took our government to act on these murders just because it was Indians.
I grew up in Tulsa Oklahoma, and my husband worked at the Washington Post too. The book was very well done and must have taken a lot to get through it. Lots of past and future all rolled into one. I thank him for sharing this story with us.
I read this in order to learn more about my own family’s history as non-allotted Osages. In our family, the story goes that my great-grandfather took his name off the rolls in order to give his half-white children a better chance in life. Now I realize there was perhaps more to that story than purely economic survival.
