This is a great book for learning legal writing and argumentation. In particular, the sample memoranda and other office documents. If one is preparing for law school, this would be a good book to at least review as to better understand the difference between academic and legal writing paradigms. The book is very clear and comes with a litany of examples and explanations, which is extremely helpful.
I guess you might expect a 5th edition book on reasoning and writing style to be well written! It is. Designed for 1st year law students, I got it becaause I am not an attny but spend a lot of time reading federal manuals and regulations with a lot of legal reaaoning beneath them, and then interpreting them and writing guidance to what they mean. Also i work in a field where cases regularly go to administrative law judges or where I get decisons back from them, and I also try to act in coordination with decisions in other jurisdictions or case that I am aware of. I found the book very useful. it actually functions as a fairly good working overview of the legal "system" - briefs, opinions, depositions, motions, claims, etc, while focusing most of the course on reasoning and writing per se. Some might might also enjoy the older 1970s book, cited by Neumann, Twining, "how to do things with rules." Books like Neumann on clear reasoning and clear writing are always useful, and this will likely improve your general writing skills as well.
Excellent book - wonderfully simple and detailed in explanation of the foundation and "how-to" of legal reasoning and writing - which is unlike anything else. The book arrived sooner than expected and the quality was far better than advertised. Will most likely use this shipper again notwithstanding the "Legal Analysis: The Fundamental Skill" event.
Depends on your class if it's worth saving and not going 7th edition. We use ours in class, so it's a pain for me, but this works usually and was well worth the like 5 bucks. Neumann moved around chapters, though. Annoying. But so cheap vs. 7th...
Have not read the book in total yet, but as I skim through it, I am finding the layout and approach to be very organized and instructive as compared to other books I have reviewed within our legal library. The question-answer approach should be very didactic. Probably going to be a winner, plus I tend to like publications from this publisher.

Currently a 1L student.The book is an excellent source for legal writing. It has sample documents in the appendices and practice exercises throughout the book. Inside the front and back pages are list of questions to ask yourself after producing a draft in order to double check that you've covered everything in your paper. It's definitely a book that I'll find useful in years to come. Also, my professor raves about this book! Never mind that this edition has a few typos in it...oops.Good purchase, especially for your legal writing class.
