These tales are contemporary to each other, as they both vividly represent Greece in the mid 20th Century. This was an important and definitive era for modern Greece; the impact of the German-Italian occupation of World War II and the subsequent Greek Civiil War are still very relevant topics in Greece to this day. Additionally, Both ELENI and PANAYOTA document this period through the events of women.While ELENI is directly about the war, PANAYOTA presents domestic and universally feminist issues of the time. In an attempt to escape a label of “Shameâ€, she pursues an inevitably lethal path. As the story unfolds in the aftermath of her murder, we see which aspects of “shame†were externally or internally imposed upon Panayota. The second half of the book chronicles the family’s arduous path to seek justice for their beloved Panayota. Along the way, not only do we have a detailed account of life and culture of Greece, but we are provided with a detailed view in to the state of the post-civil war legal system and its politics.
I would highly recommend this riveting non-fiction book to all adults. I purchased two books and my husband and I both read it. My husband could relate to the facts from a personal perspective as his mother would always talk to him about a sad part of history in the village of Koupaki. He was enthralled by the events, the characters, and the setting as if he was actually part of the plot. The tragic fate of Panayota, who valued the commitment of marriage more than her happiness and well-being, is quite moving. My Italian background enabled me to understand a relationship based on honor and respect and sympathize with a loving family's quest for justice.
This book is as clever and thoughtful as its title. The author delivers a real page turner with elegant prose, powerful content and insightful thoughts. The reader is immersed into the moving and epic story of a man's honorable stance in the face of adversity and his eventual triumph. At every page, you are excited to see how the story will unfold. I gave a copy to my Canadian friend and she was impressed with the true to life insights that transcend all cultures. I look forward to reading it again and again.
What an emotional memoir!This story reads like a breathtaking detective that teaches humanity in the darkness of cruelty and suffering. I am so grateful for author's effort to restore the trials of his aunt Panayota. Brilliant work!Great read for those who seek some food for soul. I'd give it seven stars.
