Another 'mind opening' (or as 'K' would have probably preferred to have called it, 'a mind freeing') book. The more I read Krishnamurti's books, I'm in awe of how simple his writings/teachings really are but yet so profound. I'm also amazed as to how most people have never heard of him or his writings. I went through University, Med School, Post Graduate training and yet had never heard or been taught any of his literature. Wish I had many years ago ....What impresses most about his stuff is that he sincerely wants us to 'free' ourselves from all authority and conditioning -- including his own !!Not many authors, teachers or religious figures can claim such austerity in their teachings. This book is a gem..... wish it would be a required reading in all our early education courses. Why shouldn't 'self understanding/knowledge' be as important (if not more than) economics, science, religions, math, etc. Psychology courses and treatments centered on 'fixing our problems' via a conditioned mind can only lead to redecorating our prison walls; however, self understanding / realization via 'attention / awareness' may finally break the prison walls and free us completely!! (I think that's the jixt of his message) Something not easy to do b/c the mind that we rely on to free us is the same mind that binds us via the guards of our conditions -- So how to be free? -- Attention / Realization of 'As One Is'.
Having had this book on my shelf for years now, I can say to you that referring back to it in times of 'confusion' helpsclear the air between my ears. Why wait?J Krishnamurti gently guides you in examining your most closely held "identity" baggage and leads one to lay it wide open if only for you to see. But it's not just you. It's me, him, her & the guy ten thousand miles away. It's not the catholics, the muslims, the taoists.....this book is for everyone. If you have lingering, nagging questions about who you are and why you are the way you *think* you are, buy this book. The prose is not overly challenging, per se, which in my opinion is the key to Mr. K's effective mentoring of your mind. Not his! Yours!! It's all about us, no matter who we are. Strip away the filth of conditioning and find that you are as transparent as the clearest sky. This is probably one of two or three of my favorite books by this author.Free Your Mind. Be Human. Then teach your children well.....
Some things that Krishamurti says I don't really agree with. However, I must admit I am a fan of Krishnamurti. I like a great deal of what he has to say, I think he was a brilliant and insightful person, and it's too bad there aren't more minds out there like his. Just because I don't agree with everything he says doesn't mean I dislike it or think it's wrong. I don't think he would really want us to look at it that way anyway. I think he would suggest that like everything else, we question it and ponder it. Actively consider the teachings and spend some time thinking on them. It's a bit deep, and at times and hard to wrap your mind around, but hey, that's what reading is for...expanding your mind. Work at it and try to understand what he's talking about. Ponder it, question it. That's what it's about. If you are interested in expanding your mind and broadening your horizons, and don't mind a nice mental challenge, pick up this, or other Krishnamurti books.I haven't finished it yet, but I'm working on it. The man had an intriguing mind. I am a fan!
Yes I agree with other reviewer , prepare to be jolted ! I'm not even close to finishing the book. It's a shame a lot of people are still not aware of this man and his teachings , especially today's young people who are clearly lost . I found out about krishnamurti by accident browsing the barns n noble years ago , though I knew stumbled on something profound I was still to immature to grasp the full meaning of his teachings. His books should be thrown out of helicopters to the masses who are asleep !
Krishnamurti presents the only true "spiritual" and psychological revolution. If you are truly interested in this subject you can clear your book shelf of other publications and get right to the heart of the matter.
I've been reading many of Krishnamurti's books for many years. Although the message may seem repeating, I still find it insightful and refreshing because I'm still struggling to internalize his teaching. This book is refreshing to me every time I read it. He points out something that to me is very true but may be provocative to some: "...a mind that is occupied is never free to discover what is truth", that is no matter what occupies the mind including career, ambition, self-improvement etc. "everywhere society is conditioning the individual, and this conditioning takes the form of self-improvement, which is ... perpetuation of the 'me', the ego..."
I really appreciated those 4 books of Krishnamurti I bought recently. "To be human", "On love and loneliness", "As One Is" "The first and last freedom". I cannot express clearly enough how those books have changed me and given me inner peace and freedom. It was like waking up to the reality I always knew deep inside. I just didn`t know that someone else actually had thought, talked and written about, what I myself my whole life had been thinking.I will buy the rest of Krishnamurtis books, and I have no favourites; I think they all have their own significance. It is no boring repeating, as you often find with other authors in the same category. The books was also very cheap, good quality, fast delivered, and they arrived way before estimated time.
Hard to rate JK. Don't know if he is being obtuse, brilliant or just plain weird. That being said I have read much of what he has written and like to think I understand some of it.
