I am an experienced Python programmer that needed to learn Ruby for my job.I'm about half way through this book and I really like it. It is very well written, organized in a logical way, and is easy to follow. I think it could accommodate anyone that wants to learn Ruby. If you have no previous programming experience you will probably have some difficulties jumping right into this book, but it would be possible with some supporting materials.This is not a reference book. It is also not a traditional text book, so it is lacking exercises and problems to solve.I think it could have struck a better balance by having problems and exercises for self learners, but it does have good code examples.
Awesome book for a complete beginner. David does a great job of tying in multiple concepts in complex examples that are informative and interesting. He is incredibly knowledgeable of the Ruby language and chooses the books topics carefully and in a precise (albeit nontraditional) order. For example, he begins talking about class inheritance and doesn't say much about the Integer and String classes until ~halfway through the book. Contrarily, learning through say Code Academy may enable you to write more code in a shorter amount of time, but may leave you clueless when you inevitably turn to more advanced topics. My only complaint is that there are no practice exercises (which are usually hell to find online, along with solutions), but that's not the end of the world I guess.
I bought this book for a class I attended at a local, junior college. A good introductory book for Ruby. If you have no prior programming experience, a concept or two might be challenging to understand. I say that because the book does cover a lot of basic, programming concepts, but there are only a few exercises per chapter, which are mostly demonstrative and only scratches the surface. The exercises work, but I prefer a lot of examples so I can practice.
If you're the kind of person that needs things explained as if you were a 5-year-old like myself, this is our guy.
I am about half way through this book and so far I am very happy with the level of detail used by the author. I would recommend this book to any developer that is trying to step into the Ruby language.
